Edutainment is My Dream

EDUTAINMENT IS MY DREAM

By Rika Rachmita Sujatma, S.Pd., M.M

What do students really expect from an education process (i.e., classroom education)? Based on their opinions on the 2nd  ALCoB English Speech Contest  under the theme  Edutainment Park is My Dream in Busan Korea, they expressed that they needed an education which was a combination between education and entertainment.

They got the meaning of edutainment after they experienced a learning process through a series of a collaborative project implementation that they did in groups of students consisting of 8 countries (Indonesia, Korea, Thailand, The Philippines, China, Vietnam, Mexico and Peru). The activities was held as a part of Institute of APEC Collaborative Education (IACE) program.  During the activities students were grouped based on their common interests about a subject matter. They started the project by planning a proposal to be approved by IACE. They did all the activities written on the proposal as if they were really professionals. The result was very extraordinary. It showed their passion, creativity, inovation, teamwork and future prospect of development.

On the presentation sessions as a part of final work report, they expressed that they didn’t feel learning something. The robotics team, for instance, expressed that they didn’t feel learning Physics or Mathematics theories full of difficult formulas. They felt, however, that they were in a play ground full of entertainment where they could  touch and play with all objects around them. By doing so, they said that they understood what they really did. They also expressed that working in groups made them understand the real living values. They learnt how to live  together, be responsible, manage conflicts . They also learnt how to understand and respect others for their common goals.

Teachers and educators should consider the students’ expression and need to improve the quality of education. There won’t be any harm to adapt the learning process based on students’ edutainment concept. The learning process should be regarded as a challenge for teachers to perform joyful but meaningful learning. The ultimate goal of learning should not be aimed just to achieve high scores on National Examination. One of Indonesian students stated on his speech,”We want to get mant things but actually we don’t get anything.”

The statement is  a criticism for teachers because it is based on the real experience that happened not only to that particular student but also millions of students in Indonesia.

The criticism should be followed by teachers real actions to improve the quality of their teaching skills. Firstly, Teachers should be able to perform a “different” teaching and learning process that might be out of their routines in order to implement the edutainment concept. The learning process should be joyful but meaningful so students feel that ther were in an edutainment park. Secondly, teacher’s role is as a capable tour guide  who will not let the students be stranded in the middle of nowhere. Thirdly, teachers do not facilitate the edutainment activities by asking students to go to a “fake” edutainment Park where students need to pay expensive entrance tickets. Teachers merely create inovative and collaborative activities that will allow students to learn well. This is very important because the quality improvement should be experienced by all members of the class. It should not be focused for fast and intelligent learners only.
